Toledo & Escorial Tour from Madrid

Toledo & Escorial Tour from Madrid

This combined full day tour includes half day excursion to Toledo and half day to Escorial and Valley of the Fallen. You can order this tour with or without lunch included.

Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and its greatest wealth is its monuments. Known as the "city of the three cultures" because Moors, Christians and Jews lived together there for centuries, this great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of La Mancha a real open-air museum.

The Monastery of El Escorial was built under the reign of the powerful King Philip II to be a Residence for the Kings, Monastery and Pantheon of the Royal Family, becoming a symbol of the great power of the Spanish Empire on the time. The monument was declared of Artistic and Historical interest, and "Mankind Heritage."

Description

Vibrant in history, Toledo became a fortified city under Roman occupation - its location and the River Tajo made it an ideal fortress, and from that moment on the city became one of Spain's most important political, economic and cultural centers.

The Monastery of El Escorial was built as a monument to commemorate the Spanish victory over the French in the battle of Saint Quentin in 1557. It functions as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school. The Monastery also houses the Mausoleum of the Spanish Monarchs, and it is considered as one of the Eight Wonders of the World.
