Escorial Tour from Madrid

Escorial Tour from Madrid

On this small group tour, you'll visit the Monastery of El Escorial that was built under the reign of the powerful King Philip II to be a Residence for Kings, Monastery and Pantheon of the Royal Family, becoming a symbol of the great power of the Spanish Empire on the time.

The monument was declared of Artistic and Historical interest, and "Mankind Heritage."

The visit includes the Monastery, the Cloister of the Four Evangelists, the Palace of Philip II, Pantheons of the Royal Family, the Chapterhouses, and the Basilica.

If, by any chance, the Basilica is not open to the public, the tour will instead visit the important Library of El Escorial.

Description

The Monastery of El Escorial was built as a monument to commemorate the Spanish victory over the French in the battle of Saint Quentin in 1557. It functions as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school. The Monastery also houses the Mausoleum of the Spanish Monarchs, and it is considered as one of the Eight Wonders of the World.

The Valley of the Fallen was built between 1940 and 1958 and commemorates all those who died on both sides during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). About 40,000 Nationalist and Republican soldiers are buried here. The gigantic cross and huge crypt were erected specifically to honor the deaths of people who died 'for Spain'. It was built by those who were 'against Spain', the left-wing prisoners captured during the war.
